Written immediately after Contemporary Folk Week of the 2002 Swannanoa Gathering, this song (known by most as "The Sponge Bob Song") is about my creative daughter, Meagan.
Since writing and recording the song I've learned that there's a mistake in it. Meagan likes a type of little candy (found on the bulk candy aisle in larger grocery stores) in the shape of a Hershey's Kiss only a little larger - "those triangles with dots." They are usually pastel orange, yellow or green with dot-shaped sprinkles on the bottom. I erroneously thought they were called petit-fours. I've since learned that petit-fours are little cakes. I believe these are actually called non-pareils. Oh well, guess I'll have to weave that word into a song somewhere, someday!
You are so real. When you hear thunder peal
you reach for this little squeal that’s right there in your soul.
You’ve got things to say. You’ve found just the ways you’ve wanted
to convey all that’s in your soul.
There’s all you love about horses and making your own reef.
With space to make your choices you’ve room beyond belief.
Your songs and recitations. Your tales of daring-do.
Juice-pop combinations autographed and given to us by….
You watch Sponge Bob. You’ve got no heart throbs…yet I know time’s knob
will change that on our stroll.
You grow just your way. You listen then you say.
You live from that special place right there in your soul.
There’s sweets too yum like petit-fours those triangles with dots.
“Can I have some?” “What’s mine is yours.”
Did you ever try a Zotz?
Those sour, funny faces you make when it’s more than you can chew have got something to say about the risks we all take in this life and you’re the only one living yours.
There’s this place down deep inside of me I’m finally getting to
all because you came along in an October debut.
Life was already grand, but now it’s grander still because of you.
I’d never mean to condescend. Cuz I know you comprehend
when sometimes my own agenda is all that I can see.
Believe me now, from my heart up, I’m sorry for the times
I’ve interrupted you when you were filling me in on what you see.
Cuz there’s life’s that’s never been lived before coursing through our veins. Memories shared with more in store through sunshine, wind and rain.
Grow up. Wake up. Live from your core. Breathe through all you do.
Try hard not to try too hard in this big ole life God’s given to you.
You are so real. When you hear thunder peal
you reach for this little squeal that’s right there in your soul.
