Written for the Sunday before Thanksgiving 2003 at Christ Unity Church of Chattanooga, TN, this song is about gratitude. Mrs. Ever Scott was the nursery worker at Roswell Presbyterian Church when I was growing up. Ever lived in subsidized housing, dipped snuff, and had laughter that ranged from deep and boisterous to cackling and uncontrollable. She was perhaps the most giving person and with the most unique name I haveEVER known. Though she actually never pronounced my name correctly (I was always Bryant and my brother Kent she called Keith) I knew her love for me and the rest of us in the church nursery she kept.
When my friend and interpretor for the deaf extraordinaire, Jean Plant interprets this song it haunts me that the she sets up Ever as a character to whom she refers throughout the song. "For Ever I sing for always." That's so cool. And Ever would love it!!
She was always in the room. She was always close at hand.
I remember her perfume. And that she’d always understand.
Hers was laughter deep & fine. Hers were all the riches pure.
My first & funny valentine. Her kindness with me endures.
And for Ever I sing. For Ever I sing. For Ever I sing gratitude.
For Ever I sing. For Ever I’ll sing. Forever I’ll sing gratitude.
She never really knew my name. At least she never said it right.
But I knew she loved all the same. That we were her delight.
Ever had effect on me. Ever loving all the way.
Ever filling. Ever free. Ever faithful everyday.
And for Ever I sing. For Ever I sing. For Ever I sing gratitude.
For Ever I sing. For Ever I’ll sing. Forever I’ll sing gratitude.
Ever beautiful. Ever dutiful. Ever on.
As the years spun ‘round the wheel. As changes moved me down the road
Her hug I still could firmly feel, her heart in her humble abode.
Off’ring all she had with grace. Freely giving God her mite.
In every line upon her face a world of love and light.
And for Ever I sing. For Ever I sing. For Ever I sing gratitude.
For Ever I sing. For Ever I’ll sing. Forever I’ll sing gratitude.
