Sandy's Smile

(Bryan Field McFarland)
2005-03-11
Bryan Field McFarland & Rob Seals
Tuning: CGDGCD, Capo 4 Written in: Maryville, TN & Greensboro, NC 2003 On September 12, 2001 Diane and I learned that a friend of ours, Sandra Bradshaw, had been one of the flight attendants on United Flight 93 that went down in Shanksville, PA.

Written on the 2nd anniversary of that tragic day, this song is my attempt to honor the love Sandy had for her family and the love they still have for her. Sandy was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC. Her husband Phil once commented that what he missed most about Sandy was her smile. His words are really the song.
Her smile is the one thing he says he misses the most.
Whenever I saw her it was what I noticed first.
Standing proudly with her children by her side when I saw her the last time. Brightly beaming as they threw arms open wide. Loving life was her pastime.

Love does not go down in planes or towers tall.
It carries over distances mile upon mile.
Love does not go down. Does not go down at all.
And I know this, at least in part, because of Sandy’s smile.

I remember when I heard where she’d been on that morning.
And I’m convinced she helped put those plans in tailspin
- they had some sort of forewarning.
I can see her in the eye of my mind - courageous & consoling.
Knowing they must act on what they’d learned.
Sensing the bell for them was tolling.

Love does not go down in planes or towers tall.
It carries over distances mile upon mile.
Love does not go down. Does not go down at all.
And I know this, at least in part, because of Sandy’s smile.

Had it been me up in that sky upon that day
Would I have had the heart to give and the words to say?
As life goes on and time goes by
I wonder at the love that lives even though we die.

Cuz love does not go down in planes or towers tall.
It carries over distances mile upon mile. Love does not go down.
Does not go down at all.
And I know this, at least in part, because of Sandy’s smile.
